_______________________________________________
SCORE BASICS:
Indoor distances are either 9 or 18 meters, with either a 60 or 40 cm face.
New students ( adult or youth) will be assigned 9 meter distances as this class is designed to offer the fundamentals of scoring, while providing continued training to enable students to progress to further distances.

Each month, on the third weekend we score.
Great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of what each ring is worth, the power of the lines that edge the rings, what arrows may help in a strategy to gain points, and how to keep score.
If students are a member of the Learn Archery & USA Archery JOAD/AAP program, they can use this session to earn rank and pin awards. This continual "dry-run" makes scoring at a Tournament event more comfortable .
Youth are to learn how to do this, independent of parental supervision.
Scoring Class Basics: Please arrive early to obtain and fill out your score card with name, distance, and date .

  • First scoring arrow begins at time slot of session. Arrive early  to have practice/sight-in shots.
  • In order to complete the 30 arrows for indoors, students must be geared up and on the line at start of class, with scorecard filled out and ready to go.
  • Those with their own arrows may shoot 6 arrows each end which will allow completion of scorecard if "on time" start.
  • Earning pins? must be both a USA Archery Youth, Adult or Family member & Learn Archery JOAD or SOAD member- print USA Archery membership card
  • Those seasoned JOAD SOAD members using program arrows will start with three arrows, unless class numbers permit 6 arrows each end. ( student may not finish in time allotted if using only 3 arrows).
  • New students focus will be to learn protocol, and how to complete the score cards, and will shoot 3 arrows per end (will not end with a completed a score card due to time considerations.) Adults not scoring at their appropriate distance of 18 meters with correct 40 cm size faces, or students not members of JOAD/SOAD and using program arrows will use 3 arrows each end for time considerations for those earning rank , and may not end with a completed card.
Any student participating in class needs minimum USA Archery “RECREATIONAL” membership ($15). See below.

To earn rank/pins, student must hold a full "youth" or "adult" , or "family" membership, plus a JOAD Club membership
Please print a copy of your USA Archery membership card and bring it to class for our records when scoring

Training this week
"Cupids Arrow"

Cupids Arrow
Several tournaments will be coming up, and one training focus is to be "in the moment"  and we work on switching up how you see a "target".
This week we will have some fun, and check our steady precision.(If you are attending a tournament, or wish to use a target face and practice, we will make that available for those with their own bows.)
As Valentines day is next Tuesday, we will have some fun this weekend with our training. Our targets will include hearts, and the training will focus on using the strength from back muscles, steady, long, solid arm positions, using the techniques we have been working on to feel those muscles better so we can “engage” them to "holding".
Where the hearts intersect, will be the high score region.

February 4th & 5th Training: Set up/See the shot
We often say: “See your Shot”, meaning bring your draw hand up so that it is in front of your face about nose height, in your line of sight to the target, and you will “see” your shot…see the hand that is holding the string. This is a "Set -UP" position, which sets your alignment into an angular rather than linear motion, allowing your draw rotation to take place more easily, and the back to load, as the bow arm is slightly off to the left (for right handed shooters).

“See your Shot” can also mean that you do not blink. A recent article reviewed greater successes in archery with a simple awareness of not blinking, and maintaining eye focus for the few seconds of draw /load /anchor/transfer/ hold/ aim/ release/ follow-through.

The mental portion of “See your Shot”, means to visualize the entire shot sequence in your mind with eyes closed, by removing yourself from the line, and mime the entire shot sequence, with eyes closed, no equipment, going through perfect form, seeing your shot, all arrows landing in the gold.

How to get to "set-up" and "See your Shot":

The set-up position, see photos below, is achieved not by physically drawing the string back by using the hand and forearm, but by positioning the draw shoulder and scapulae.  It can be helpful when doing the set-up to visualize the string fingers being connected to the elbow via chains, which will allow for more relaxed drawing fingers, hand and forearm.  The archer should be looking in between both hands at the gold on the target "See the shot".
Predraw Shoulder Setup
Predraw Shoulder Setup
When taking up the Set-up position there can be a natural tendency to lean back away from the target to counteract the weight of the bow, which will worsen as the weight increases during the draw. It is therefore advisable to lean slightly forward to the target in the set-up position to counteract this natural tendency.
